At their regular meeting on August 22, 2022, the Cooper I.S.D. Board of Trustees voted to reduce the current tax rate from $1.1603 in 2021 to $1.1029 for the coming year, the lowest tax rate in more than 25 years.
This rate is a 33-cent reduction over the past five years, now representing the lowest allowable Maintenance and Operations (M&O) compressed rate from Texas Education Agency. Additionally, the district’s Interest and Sinking (I&S) rate represents a 40% decrease over the last five years due to the district’s solid financial investments and planning.
Ultimately, Cooper ISD is funded according to the number of students in attendance for the school year. Any gain in local tax collections is automatically offset by a subsequent reduction in state aid received.
Nevertheless, the state of Texas requires the following language to be posted for all taxing entities:
Cooper Independent School District ADOPTED A TAX RATE THAT WILL RAISE MORE TAXES FOR MAINTENANCE AND OPERATIONS THAN LAST YEAR’S TAX RATE.
The total Cooper ISD 2022-2023 tax rate includes $.9429 for the daily maintenance and operations of the district and $0.16 for payment of interest and sinking debts.
